EPA and DHA are essential fatty acids that the body cannot make and must be provided by other means. EPA, in particular, is needed to counter the inflammatory properties of excess omega-6 (arachidonic acid (AA)) consumed in our diets. This proper balance promotes cardiac health, positive mood, respiratory health, joint comfort and flexibility.

The American Heart Association recognizes the importance of the Omega-3 essential nutrients EPA and DHA in promoting cardiac health. The JELIS study demonstrates the importance of the high EPA in OmegaBrite® to provide important anti-inflammatory protection for cardiac and overall health.Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation helps keep joints flexible and pain free. In studies involving rheumatoid arthritis patients, patients ingesting higher amounts of EPA and DHA saw a reduction in their arthritis symptoms in a shorter time. Omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to benefit cognitive, vision, and hormonal functions, and assist in the maintenance of a healthy weight. Fatty fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines, and tuna are significant sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, and two 3 ounce servings per week are recommended. Most seafood contains these essential fatty, including shellfish, however generally speaking the more fat a fish has, the greater the concentration of Omega-3s.

With that ,  healthy eating and dieting is essential. Not all cultures share the American dietary habits, and interestingly those who eat what is referred to as the Mediterranean Diet, which I personally have started doing, which consists of a much lower ratio of Omega-6s to Omega-3s seem to suffer much less cardiovascular disease than their American counterparts. The major differences in eating habits, such a reliance on seafood for much protein (rather than beef) and hearty portions of whole grains, olive oil, fresh fruit and vegetables, seems to lessen the risk of the health issues that plague people who have a less favorable balance of fatty acids in their diet. While this diet does not guarantee against heart disease, it continues to support the research that is showing just how important Omega-3 fatty acids are in maintaining proper health.
